Transmission systems applied in steering mechanisms are under constant research in the improvement of the gear profiles in order to reduce the efforts in service, symmetry in the returnability and increase the life of the gear system. New finishing processes for these types of components have been the subject of research by many researchers, but there are still gaps that need to be explored. In this context, the "honing" process for helical gears has shown good results in terms of gear quality, while the "hard shaving" process, also known as milling after heat treatment, has surpassed the traditional finishing processes for helical gears. The objective of this work is to compare the gear characteristics of the helical pinion teeth generated from the hard shaving process and the innovative honing process. The experiments were carried out in an auto parts industry in the State of São Paulo. We sought to compare the two processes with respect to gear quality in the propeller profile and involute, under the DIN standard. The results showed that the "honing" process compared to the "hard shaving" process was at least 6 times higher than the micrometric dispersion for the helix and involute profiles, considering DIN 6 quality for the honing process and DIN 9 for the "hard shaving" process. However, the results showed a reasonable ability to eliminate gear errors by applying the honing process for the machining of helical tines applied in steering mechanisms.
