Resumo

Electric Discharge Machine (EDM) is an unconventional machining process that relies on the removal of material by successive electric discharges. In this work, it is proposed the study of acoustic emission (AE) signals as identifiers of wear mechanisms in EDM. For that, EDM tests were performed with two different parameters and in parallel the evaluation of the AE signals and the electrodes performance during each operation was performed. The first test of EDM uses more aggressive parameters to the electrode and part compared to the parameters of the second test. Thus, the electrode obtained 2.4 times higher wear rates in the first test compared to the second. Finally, the characterization of the process and the analysis of the AE signals of the machining were carried out using Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) techniques. After this, it was possible to correlate the AE signals with the wear behavior of the electrode. The results showed that the acoustic emission signals are sensitive to the wear rate of the electrode.
