Resumo
The hard turning process is usually performed by PCBN tools or mixed ceramics, which have mechanical properties that of withstanding the tribological conditions imposed by the machined material. The aim of this work is to discuss the level of wear and the correlation with wear mechanisms in turning AISI 52100 steel with hardness of 50 HRC using PCBN tools and mixed ceramics for different cutting speeds (120-234 m / min) . Using three-dimensional wear parameters based on the Focus Variation Microscope (FVM), the results pointed to an inversion in the behavior of the WRM (material volume removed) parameter of the tools for cutting speeds above 150 m / min. he PCBN tool presents better results up to 150 m / min, from this value, for higher cutting speeds, the mixed ceramic tool presented the best performance With the increase of the cutting speed (120-234 m / min) the WRM parameter increased by 200% for the mixed ceramic tool and 650% for the PCBN tool.
