Resumo
The Al-1wt.%Sn and Al-1wt.%Sn-1.5wt.%Fe alloys were solidified under transient heat extraction and the thermal parameters imposed by the solidification process were correlated with the microstructural scale. The results obtained showed that for both investigated alloys, the microstructural morphology is composed by a-Al cells, and the intercellular regions were surrounded by ß-Sn phase, in the binary alloy, and by ß-Sn and Al3Fe-intermetallic, in the ternary alloy. The tip growth rate (¬VL) and cooling rate (?) ranges imposed during the upward solidification experiments in a water cooled mold, provided microstructural correlations against ?C. Increasing VL and ? lead to a more refined ?C, following power laws equations, whose exponents are -0.55 and -1.1, respectively, for both alloys. The chemical composition profile of the alloys throughout the ingots showed that the transient solidification of the experiments provided conditions which avoided the occurrence of macrosegregation.
