Resumo
Chip color variation resulting from types and thicknesses of different iron oxides is a phenomenon intrinsic to the cut, revealing the thermal flux during machining. Hereupon, this paper proposes to understand the formation of oxides in chips and to obtain a relationship between the chip colors and the thermal behavior when milling mold and die steels. For this purpose, the chip color was related to the main flank wear of the carbide tool, varying three conditions: dry, wet and cryogenic cooling. In dry and cryogenic conditions, similar chip colors and types of oxides have indicated close cutting temperatures. Otherwise, in wet condition, the chip color variation in a unique machining cycle (single chip) has evidenced great thermal instability that led to the brief end of the tool life in this condition compared to others. By analyzing the chip colors associated with the oxides characterization by Raman microspectroscopy, the effect of different cooling conditions on the thermal flux during the machining was able to identify.
